Dreamtime Dance Residencies 2017

"Stained and Staining"

6th - 10th November 2017
Paul Michael Henry & Penny Chivas

A dance on film exploratory residency by Paul Michael Henry and Penny Chivas.

This residency follows an initial film project by Paul and Penny entitled 'The Distance between my Eyes and the Back of My Head', made in 2016 and recently selected for Perth Dance Festival (Screen Awards). This was a collaboration between Paul, Penny, their bodies, the environment on location at a disused farmhouse, and film technology. We were excited by what we started to discover during it (even though it was done over one day and improvised on minimum budget), and we're using the Dreamtime residency to properly research the possibilities for collaboration into dance on film.

Open Class: Thursday 9th November, 10.00-11.30am
Paul and collaborator Penny Chivas will draw upon and blend their somatic, yoga and Noguchi taiso knowledge to offer a class that allows us to drop deeply into our body, awaken the senses and become aware of our movement possibilities for the day before opening out into some (hopefully outdoor) movement explorations taking our centered approach with us.

Company Showing: Friday 10th November, 4.00pm
The open class and company showing are both free and open to anyone who is interested in dance, film, performance, arts.
If you wish to attend the class please let Jenna Agate know you are coming.

New Work
20th - 24th November 2017
Al Seed

Al will use this residency to build a physical character which will then form the foundation for a future, full-length work of dance-theatre. Al's inroad into this character is the figure of the outcast-giant, a figure common to mythology and fairytales as well as popular culture. Al will explore how motifs of gigantism and being 'out of scale / place' play out in reference to his own physicality and movement vocabularies, and in relation to a variety of source materials.

Open Class: Thursday 23rd November, 10.00-11.30am
In keeping with the nature of the work Al will be conducting for his Dreamtime residency this class will blur the distinctions between dance and movement technique, devising skills, and improvisation. The class has two aims: to be fun; and to provide participants of all levels and backgrounds with a clear and simple set of tools with which to devise physical performance of all kinds. Key areas of focus will include: 'listening' as a fundamental performance tool, performance as game, spatial dynamics, and the physical mechanics of group movement.

Company Showing: Friday 24th November, 4.00pm
The open class and company showing are both free and open to anyone who is interested in dance, film, performance, arts.
If you wish to attend the class please let Jenna Agate know you are coming.
